From Interrupted Schooling to a Future in Nursing: Houzaifa’s Story

10 April 2025

Education Restored His Path. Nursing Became His Future.

Houzaifa Khaled Al-Sayyadi was born on April 19, 2005, in Syria. In 2011, his family fled the conflict and sought safety in Lebanon. Like many refugee children, Houzaifa’s education was abruptly interrupted. Having completed only Grade 1 in Syria, he spent nearly three years out of school after arriving in Lebanon because there were no educational opportunities available to him.

Everything changed in 2015 when JRS Lebanon opened Al Nahriya School in Bar Elias. Houzaifa enrolled in Grade 2 and continued his education there until 2022. The school provided far more than academic learning, it gave him stability, encouragement, and the confidence to believe in his future.

After completing his studies at Al Nahriya School, Houzaifa continued his educational journey with the Kayani Foundation, where he earned his Grade 9 certificate. Determined to pursue a meaningful career, he then enrolled at Majdal Anjar Technical Institute to study nursing. In 2025, he successfully completed his program and sat for the official Lebanese Technical Baccalaureate examinations.

Today, Houzaifa is completing his internship at Bekaa Hospital and Ghras Al-Kheir Clinic while awaiting his official examination results. He looks forward to beginning his career as a nurse, dedicated to caring for others and serving his community.

Looking back on his journey, Houzaifa describes his years at Al Nahriya School as a turning point in his life:

“Everything was positive. I received quality education and psychological support when I needed it most. I regained a sense of safety and built lasting friendships with my teachers and classmates. Without this opportunity, I would have remained illiterate with no professional future. The school gave me a second chance, shaped my personality, and opened doors I never imagined possible.”

Houzaifa’s story is a testament to the transformative power of education. With access to learning, psychosocial support, and a safe environment, he was able to overcome years of interrupted schooling and pursue his dream of becoming a healthcare professional. His journey reflects the resilience of refugee youth and the life-changing impact of investing in education, dignity, and hope.
